After testing the installation routine mentioned in previous posts on a virtual machine, I ensured that the following was done for a clean installation:
1. Created "lotus" group after installation (sudo groupadd lotus).
2. Added my user account to the "lotus" group (System > Administration > Users and Groups).
2. Changed the group security properties to "lotus" for the program directory (sudo chgrp -R lotus /opt/ibm/*) and the shared directory (sudo chgrp -R lotus /etc/lotus/*).
3. Made my user account the owner for my data directory (sudo chown -R USERNAME /home/USERNAME/lotus/*).
4. Logged out and back in.
When I started Lotus Notes, it went through the normal configuration wizard just as it should. Without access to the shared directory, setup will produce a warning about licensing and fail to read pernames.ntf in creating names.nsf.
